My One and Only

Based on the true story of actor George Hamilton's childhood, My One and Only follows George's life across the country with his brother and mother after she leaves George's father.

Renee Zellweger is George's mom in this movie set in the late 1950's and rather than finding a job she finds it much classier to just find a nice man to marry. Several marriages and several different cities later they find themselves in California trying to make their life work. Meanwhile, George's father, played by Kevin Bacon, travels the country as the band leader for a big lounge band and occasionally runs into George (played by Logan Lerman).

Starting in New York City,the family trio go from Boston, to Pittsburgh, to St. Louis, and finally to Los Angeles. The movie is fairly funny with George's brother Robbie (Mark Rendall) stealing the show with his flamboyant quips. However, like many people in life, they are always running and never finding happiness. George wants to be a writer and Robbie wants to be an actor, while their mother wants to be married. Life may not turn out like they expect.

Also staring in the movie are David Koechner, Troy Quinn, and newcomer Molly C. Quinn.

My One and Only is Rated PG-13 for some sexuality, which was brief, but funny, and some language.

Directed by Richard Loncraine, who also did Firewall, this movie is an hour and 45 minutes long.

I thought this movie was decent. It kept me chuckling throughout and I enjoyed the subtle humor. I give My One and Only 4 stars.

Leatherheads

George Clooney has been named the "Sexiest Man Alive" two times by People magazine, the world authority on sexiness. They've obviously never met me.

Clooney stars in Leatherheads as a football player set in 1920's. Football is just starting to take hold of the public's interest and the league is struggling to make a name for itself. Unfortunately, many teams are folding and Clooney soon finds himself out of a job. He hears of a star player and a potential game in another city, so he boards a train to meet this owner.

There he meets Renée Zellwigger, a conniving, yet sassy reporter. Clooney is immediately attracted to her, though I couldn't imagine that he was attracted to her looks. I've never understood what makes people think she's all that, cuz' she ain't!

So anyway, the owner agrees to the game and Clooney rounds up former team mates. In the meantime, Zellwigger is trying to get the scoop on this new young star (not Clooney, cuz he's old). So she's playing both hands with these guys. And if one finds out about the other or her secret story, all hells going to break loose.

The movie had some interest as it seemed to represent the football era fairly accurately (or at least as accurately as we are told it resembles).

Leatherheads is rated PG-13 for language and fighting and an illegal formation. The movie is nearly 2 hours long. And the middle seems longer than the ends.

Overall, I give this movie 3 stars, and this is on the low end of three. It was okay. I certainly have no desire to see it again. It was just, you know, okay.

Bee Movie

If you like yellow, this movie is for you. Bee Movie, the computer animated movie from DreamWorks Animation, has an All-Star cast that includes celebrated actors such as Jerry Seinfeld, Renee' Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, John Goodman, Chris Rock, Kathy Bates, Oprah Winfrey, Barry Levinson, Larry King, Ray Liotta, Sting, Rip Torn, Michael Richards, and John Di Maggio. Why they are celebrated is beyond my comprehension.


Anyway, in typical made-for-kids, but made for adults style, the movie is swimming in innuendo and other adult humor. And if you like 90 minutes of corny bee references, you'll love this movie. Why do you think Sting is in this movie?


Seinfeld stars as Barry B. Benson, who graduates with straight B's in school and is now ready to start working. However, he learns that he will be doing the same job for the rest of his life, which like any busy-bee would put you in a tail-spin. He decides to sneak out of the hive and bee on his own. He discovers a human and really likes her. She becomes his honey, even though he keeps bugging her. Unfortunately, he also finds out that humans are consuming honey and even use captive bees to grow the honey. Barry decides he is going to do something about it, but it becomes a real sticky situation.


The stinger of the drama is that a wrong move by Barry could bee-come catastrophic, not only to bees, but to life in general. A tenuous court hearing in which John Goodman tries to sweet talk Judge Oprah could spell doom for Barry. Will he be able to save the day? (It's a kids' movie, what do you think?)


I let my 8 year old daughter rate this movie. She gives it 4 stars. She said it was funny and when describing her favorite part she got the giggles and couldn't stop. She says it's definitely not the best cartoon she's seen, but it was still funny and she would like to own it. Wasn't that a bee-utiful review?
